In the (predominantly) hybrid course Diversity and service learning of the Social Work and Health degree programme, the accompanying Moodle course was redesigned as part of the eTeach open space promotion and supplemented with interactive offerings that were closely supervised by a tutorial. Students were able to achieve 10 points as part of their examination performance by completing weekly quizzes on the courses and/or creating a glossary entry according to specified criteria.

The challenge of teaching

The challenges in teaching were, on the one hand, the large amount of time required to supervise interactive elements (glossary, quiz) and the didactic multitasking involved in running hybrid courses.

Goals of your practical example

The accompanying Moodle course should achieve the following goals:

  • More interaction in the Moodle course
  • Increased learning growth
  • Learning objectives of the module
    • Students develop an understanding approach to different living environments and minorities along the various dimensions of diversity.
    • Students can differentiate between prejudices and stereotypes and know why people need and use them.
    • They scrutinise their own prejudices and reflect on their own attitudes in order to develop initial professional perspectives for action.
    • In service-learning, students combine academic learning with civic engagement in the form of a service for non-profit organisations.
    • They make a useful contribution to the improvement of social tasks and analyse civic engagement.

Prerequisites for implementation

The following prerequisites were important for successful implementation:

  • H5P Plugin in Moodle
  • Tutor to supervise the Moodle course
  • Throw microphone for better interaction and sound quality of the students' voices in the hybrid course itself

Procedure

A tutorial was made possible with the funding provided. In close collaboration, a new digital teaching and learning space was created for the course based on the original Moodle course Diversity and service learning. In addition to the clearer course structure, the following new elements have been incorporated:

Glossary

In order to receive 10 points for the final exam in advance, students could voluntarily create a glossary entry on a term from the lecture. The entries were closely monitored and commented on by the tutorial throughout the semester. The students received weekly constructive feedback until the glossary entry met the requirements.

H5P Quiz

In collaboration with the research assistant, a quiz was created in H5P for each lecture unit. These were available to students for one week from the start of the course and related to the respective content of the course. Each quiz comprised around 3-4 questions of different types: multiple choice questions, multiple response questions, true/false questions, matching questions, sequence/sorting questions.

Menti Meter Quiz

For each lecture unit, an introductory quiz for the lecture was created in collaboration with the research assistant. This quiz was only available as part of the lecture and was intended to serve as a repetition and thematic introduction to the course.
