Invite AI is a 90-minute course unit on generative AI and scientific writing. It combines the teaching of theoretical principles with a practical exercise phase. With the help of a module handbook and an accompanying presentation, lecturers or Third Space staff can teach students the basic functioning of text-generative AI models and their reflective and sustainable use in the context of scientific work as part of a course unit. The course unit is aimed at students of all subject areas and semesters.
In order to take into account the different levels of previous knowledge of the participants, there are two variants to choose from for the theoretical part: a basic and an advanced variant, each of which allows the course content to be adapted accordingly.

The challenge of teaching

The potential uses of generative AI have far-reaching implications for the education sector, particularly at colleges and universities. Surveys show that students are increasingly using generative AI tools. These technologies are often used without a basic understanding of how (text)generative AI models work and the associated limitations. However, this basic knowledge is necessary in order to use (generative) AI tools sensibly, profitably and critically.

Goals of your practical example

Students gain a basic understanding of how text-generative AI chatbots work and the opportunities and risks associated with their use in academic writing. In addition, important aspects such as copyright and data protection as well as the current legal framework for the use of generative AI at their own university are addressed.
Practical exercises on a course-related task and joint reflection on the generated results promote the critical and sustainable use of text-generative AI.
The integration into a course ensures that all participating students acquire the necessary basic knowledge, overcome any existing inhibitions and uncertainties and develop initial ideas on how they can use text-generative AI tools in a meaningful way.

Prerequisites for implementation

The course unit is designed so that it can be carried out as part of a 90-minute teaching unit. A projector or smartboard as well as mobile devices are required for the implementation. The person conducting the course and some of the students should have access to text-generating AI tools.
Before the course unit is held, the set of slides must be supplemented with the university or department-specific regulations on the use of generative AI and a course-related task.
