Before the start of every chemistry lab course, students are required to attend a mandatory safety briefing. With the help of an additional online-supported self-study course, the time in the laboratory can be used more effectively, while at the same time more in-depth information can be conveyed asynchronously. The self-study course was created for the Moodle learning management system and includes the H5P elements "Columns", "Virtual Tour (360)" and "Question Set" in addition to an explanatory video. They effectively prepare the internship and increase knowledge of safety instruction. The "Virtual Tour (360)" in particular enables students to gain an insight into the laboratory setting of the internship in advance.

The challenge of teaching

Goals of your practical example

  • to spend less time on safety instruction in the actual laboratory practical course
  • to provide further information that would otherwise only be discussed in response to enquiries
  • to give the opportunity for repetition
  • to allay beginners' fears of unfamiliar laboratory learning settings

The complete description of the concept can be found on the website of the INSPIRE project of the EAH Jena.
