The „genKI teaching licence“ is a freely accessible Moodle self-study course for teachers with a completion time of approx. 120 minutes in German and English on the Virtual Campus Thuringia. It teaches the basics of how generative AI works, the opportunities and risks involved, as well as rules and application scenarios for use in teaching. Interactive exercises and a genKI traffic light support the reflective evaluation of typical application scenarios. The course has been published under a CC BY 4.0 licence and may therefore, unless otherwise stated, be reused, adapted to your own contexts and modified without prior permission, provided you cite the source.

The challenge of teaching

Generative AI is noticeably changing studying and teaching and not all teachers are prepared for it: How reliable is generative AI? What are the opportunities and risks of the technology? How can it be used effectively for teaching? What do students need to bear in mind when writing assignments? The course aims to provide basic orientation knowledge in order to answer these questions.

Goals of your practical example

The approximately 120-minute interactive Moodle course introduces the functionality, potentials and risks of generative AI, explains application scenarios of generative AI for teaching and shows rules for responsible use. Interactive exercises with a genKI traffic light challenge learners to make decisions in typical application situations. This allows them to reflect on and consolidate their knowledge. The course is supplemented by tool tips and references to further learning opportunities. The course is primarily aimed at teachers and offers a low-threshold introduction. It is intended to provide orientation, reduce uncertainty and contribute to a critical examination of the technology.

Prerequisites for implementation

The Moodle self-study course can be completed on the Virtual Campus Thuringia, the joint Moodle platform of the Thuringian universities. The Virtual Campus Thuringia can be accessed via the logins of the individual universities. However, it is also possible to create your own account under „Login“ - „Create new account“ if you do not belong to a Thuringian university.
