In the Project were three Self-learning units with Articulate Rise developed, the Students in addition instruct, their Experience from the ServiceLearning and their knowledge of the fields of social work systematic to reflect. Goal is it, superficial Reflections to overcome and the Students to one deeper Debate with their Learning and Practical experience to enable, which are continued together in subsequent online tutorials.

The challenge of teaching

In the first semester, students in a module on fields of social work write a reflection report in which they are asked to relate their experiences from service learning to the content covered. However, experience shows that these reflections often remain rather superficial. The self-study units should therefore support students in developing a more in-depth reflection on their experiences. As reflection processes cannot be tested using multiple-choice questions or similar formats, online tutorials are then held in small groups in which the content is explored and reflected on together.

Goals of your practical example

Students should develop reflective competences in order to critically relate their experiences from service-learning to the theoretical content of social work.

Prerequisites for implementation

The creation of self-learning units is very time-consuming. In our example, these were developed with the paid software Articulate Rise; however, comparable self-study units can also be created with H5P. A student assistant was involved to continuously integrate the student perspective. In addition to providing feedback on the content, she was particularly involved in developing the creative elements of the self-study unit.

Procedure

The didactic concept envisages starting with an example from a fictitious service-learning project, for which the students are asked specific questions for reflection. In further steps, they are instructed to transfer this reflection to other fields of social work and to their own experiences in service learning. Finally, students are given hints and tips on how to prepare for the subsequent online tutorial, in which the content is deepened and discussed together.
