The course "genKI-Führerschein - ChatGPT und Co. im Studium sicher einsetzen" is an approx. 60-minute self-study course in German and English on the Virtual Campus Thuringia. It teaches the basics of how generative AI works, the opportunities and risks involved and the rules for using it responsibly at university. Interactive exercises and a genKI traffic light support the reflective evaluation of typical application scenarios.

The challenge of teaching

The increased use of ChatGPT and other tools with generative AI has noticeably changed the way we study. However, many of these tools are still being used without reflection. A basic understanding of the technology is required in order to be able to categorise the output competently and use it productively for your own learning. This low-threshold self-study course provides this knowledge.

Goals of your practical example

The approximately 60-minute interactive Moodle course introduces the functionality, potentials and risks of generative AI and shows rules for the responsible use of generative AI in studies. Interactive exercises with a genKI traffic light challenge learners to make decisions in typical application situations. In this way, they reflect on and consolidate their knowledge. The course is supplemented by tool tips and references to further learning opportunities. The course is primarily aimed at students and offers a low-threshold introduction. It is intended to provide orientation, reduce uncertainty and contribute to a critical examination of the technology.

The course can be used both as a general training programme for students and in the course context, e.g. as preparatory flipped classroom material before course units on scientific work with generative AI, and is available in both German and English.

Prerequisites for implementation

The Moodle self-study course can be completed on the Virtual Campus Thuringia, the joint Moodle platform of the Thuringian universities. It is open to all Thuringian universities for re-use under a CC BY.4.0 licence. The Virtual Campus Thuringia can be accessed via the logins of the individual universities. However, it is also possible to create your own account under "Login" - "Create new account" if you do not belong to a Thuringian university.
