With the new „genKI driver's license for teaching“ teachers now have access to a freely accessible training course that prepares them specifically for working with generative artificial intelligence. The 120-minute self-study course, developed by the Digital University Unit at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, is provided via the Virtual Campus Thuringia and is available in both German and English.
Generative AI is noticeably changing studies and teaching and posing new challenges for teachers. Questions about the reliability of such systems, their opportunities and risks as well as meaningful applications in the teaching context are becoming increasingly important. Uncertainties in dealing with AI-supported coursework, such as homework, are also on the rise. This is precisely where the new course comes in. It provides basic orientation knowledge in order to be able to classify these developments in a well-founded manner.
The course provides a compact introduction to how generative AI works, highlights its potential and limitations and shows concrete application scenarios for university teaching. A particular focus is placed on the considered and responsible use of the technology. Interactive exercises and a so-called „genKI traffic light“ help participants to evaluate typical application situations and critically scrutinize their own decisions.
The fact that not only technical issues, but also didactic and examination culture aspects are decisive here is also shown in a recent blog post by the University Forum on Digitization. Under the title Dialog instead of detectors it is argued that the use of AI detection tools should be viewed critically and that the focus should instead be more on dialog about the sensible use of AI in teaching.
The offer is supplemented by practical tool tips and references to further learning opportunities. The aim is to reduce inhibitions, provide orientation and promote a differentiated approach to generative AI.
The course is primarily aimed at teachers, but is deliberately designed to be low-threshold and therefore also suitable for beginners. Thanks to the publication under the open license CC BY 4.0 the material can also be flexibly reused, adapted and further developed - a clear contribution to the open educational landscape.
Access is via the Virtual Campus Thuringia, the joint Moodle platform of the Thuringian universities. Members of these universities can log in with their usual access data. External interested parties can easily create their own account.
