The individual support of students with different learning requirements is a central challenge in university teaching. In order to meet this requirement and make everyday study life easier, the KiWi an innovative assistance system based on the possibilities of modern AI technologies.

KiWi is a learning support tutor based on Large Language Models (LLMs) that provides individual support to students. As a personal AI-supported learning assistant, KiWi offers tailored help with questions about the lecture material. At the heart of the system is the principle of Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG). Relevant content is retrieved specifically from a knowledge database containing information from the lecture slides provided. Based on this, the language model generates precise, context-related and content-based answers to student queries.

On June 19, 2025, Richard Klein from the Biophotonics Instrumentation Group from the EAH Jena will present how KiWi works. The presentation offers insights into the development of the system, highlights technical challenges and limitations and presents initial experiences from test phases. Finally, perspectives for future extensions will be discussed.
