You would also solve a riddle on a t-shirt? And do you think that there should be much more room for creativity an team work in teaching? Escape rooms are live-action team-based games in which players work together to discover clues, solve puzzles, and accomplish tasks within a time limit to reach a specific goal. Besides being a very popular pastime for people of all ages, they have recently started to gain momentum in academic circles as educational tools. Research findings have established that educational escape games can create immersion as they combine the strengths of storytelling and gameplay, therefore eliciting high engagement and promoting successful learning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why this workshop is important for you.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Background of the workshop.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the shift from traditional didactic classroom models to the adoption of more learner-centred active learning approaches, escape rooms are gaining popularity as alternative learning and assessment environments designed to enhance students\u2019 learning and 21st century skills in primary, secondary, higher education, and professional development programs. An educational escape room (EER) can be defined as an instructional method requiring learners to participate in collaborative playful activities explicitly designed for domain knowledge acquisition, skill development or behavioural change so that they can accomplish a specific goal (e.g., escape from a physical or virtual room, solve a murder mystery, or break into a vault) by solving puzzles linked to unambiguous learning objectives in a limited amount of time. Research indicates that, due to their playful nature which favours positive behaviour, EERs can enhance learners\u2019 motivation, engagement, and time management, increase confidence in critical thinking and decision-making, improve knowledge acquisition and academic performance. They can also encourage social interaction, which is very important in the new era of increased hybrid delivery brought upon by COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hintergrund des Workshops.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nach der Verschiebung von traditionell didaktischen Classroom-Modellen hin zur Einf\u00fchrung von lernzentrierteren aktiven Lernans\u00e4tzen, gewinnen sogenannte Escape Rooms als alternative Lern- und Bewertungsumgebungen an Popularit\u00e4t &#8211; konzipiert um das Lernen und die F\u00e4higkeiten der Sch\u00fcler:innen des 21. Jahrhunderts in der Schul- und Hochschulbildung zu verbessern. Der Educational Escape Room (EER) kann als eine Unterrichtsmethode definiert werden, bei der die Lernenden an gemeinschaftlichen spielerischen Aktivit\u00e4ten teilnehmen wodurch sie neben Wissensanwendung und -gewinnung auch neue F\u00e4higkeiten etablieren, indem sie in begrenzter Zeit R\u00e4tsel l\u00f6sen, die mit eindeutigen Lernzielen verkn\u00fcpft sind (z.B. l\u00f6sen Sie einen Krimi oder brechen in einen Tresor ein). Untersuchungen zeigen, dass EERs aufgrund ihres spielerischen und positives Verhalten beg\u00fcnstigenden Charakters, die Motivation, das Engagement und das Zeitmanagement der Lernenden verbessern sowie sie das Vertrauen in kritisches Denken und Entscheidungsfindung st\u00e4rken k\u00f6nnen. Auch auf den Wissenserwerb und die schulischen Leistungen k\u00f6nnen EERs eine zunehmend positive Auswirkung haben. Im Anbetracht der hybriden Entwicklung im Rahmen der COVID-19 Pandemie, regen die EER zudem den immer wichtiger gewordenen sozialen Austausch an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What we plan to do in the workshop.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uni-weimar.de\/fileadmin\/_processed_\/0\/5\/csm_Unbenannt-1jpg_4055b55669.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Content of the workshop<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This workshop will Introduce participants to Room2Educ8, a conceptual framework for EER design based on Design Thinking principles, that can be adapted to any subject and escape room type. This framework allows practitioners to develop their creative confidence, which is required for game-based learning to be fully realised, by engaging in hands-on projects that focus on building empathy, promoting a bias toward action, encouraging ideation, and fostering active problem-solving. Its process can be described as a cycle of (1) empathising and observing, (2) defining the problem, (3) contextualising, (4) designing puzzles, (5) briefing and (6) debriefing the participants, (7) prototyping and playtesting, (8) documenting, and (9) evaluating (Fig. 1), with the designers also reflecting and devising throughout the cycle. By the end of the workshop, participants are expected to be able to: demonstrate an understanding of puzzles, themes, and challenges commonly used in escape rooms; critically analyse and identify educational purposes for using ideas based on escape rooms; and use Room2Educ8 to plan, design, facilitate, and evaluate their own educational escape rooms. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-weimar.de\/fileadmin\/user\/uni\/hauptseiten\/Studium\/Digital_Studieren\/eTeach\/FotosBilder\/EER\/schedule_EER.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&gt;&gt;&gt; Click here to find a detailed workshop plan.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Inhalte des Workshops<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dieser Workshop stellt den Teilnehmer:innen Room2Educ8 vor, ein konzeptionelles Framework f\u00fcr EER-Design, das auf den Design Thinking-Prinzipien basiert und an jeden Inhalt und jeden Escape-Room-Typ angepasst werden kann. Dieser Rahmen erm\u00f6glicht es den Praktiker:innen ihr kreatives Selbstvertrauen zu entwickeln, das f\u00fcr die vollst\u00e4ndige Verwirklichung des spielbasierten Lernens erforderlich ist, indem sie sich an praktischen Projekten beteiligen, die sich auf den Aufbau von Empathie, die Neigung zum Handeln, die Ideenfindung und die aktive Probleml\u00f6sung konzentrieren. Der Prozess kann als Zyklus von (1) Einf\u00fchlen und Beobachten, (2) Problemdefinition, (3) Kontextualisierung, (4) R\u00e4tselentwurf, (5) Briefing, (6) Nachbesprechung der Teilnehmer:innen, (7) Prototyping sowie Spieltests, (8) Dokumentation und (9) Bewertung (Abb. 1) beschrieben werden, wobei die Designer:innen w\u00e4hrend des gesamten Zyklus sich selbst reflektieren und ihre Ideen stetig weiter entwickeln. Auch der Ablauf und die Ergebnisse aus der Arbeit der Teilnehmer:innen werden von den Organisator:innen zusammengefasst (online oder PDF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Panagiotis is the king of EER-Applications<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uni-weimar.de\/fileadmin\/_processed_\/5\/5\/csm_fotaris-profile-photo_439eef7282.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lecturer<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Panagiotis Fotaris is Principal Lecturer at the University of Brighton. He is the module leader for Game Design and Development, Narrative Design, and Design Thinking. He was Course Leader for BSc (Hons) Digital Games Development and BSc (Hons) Computer Science for Games from 2018 to 2022. Furthermore he\u00a0is an active researcher in the area of Game-based Learning. He chaired the 14th and 15th European Conference on Games-Based Learning (ECGBL 2020, ECGBL2021) and the 21st European Conference on e-Learning (ECEL 2022). Dr Fotaris has been a technical committee member for more than 30 international conferences. He has authored or co-authored 32 papers in peer-reviewed journals and international conference proceedings (<em>Google Scholar Citations: 880<\/em>). He is also Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and Certified Scrum Master (CSM).
